Treasure Machine

When my kids were between the ages of four and seven, they didn’t get excited about money.  An allowance didn’t motivate them because they didn’t connect the cash with buying a toy.  They just wanted to have a toy.  My husband and I came up with a new way to not only motivate them, but save money.  I bought a toy machine on Amazon.com.  I got to choose the color and even got to choose a sticker to go on front.  I had my kids’ names placed on front with the words “Treasure Machine”.  At the end of each week, if they had completed any jobs we gave them, they were given .50 cents to get something out of the machine and believe me, each week I made sure the surprises came out equal!  There is a way to place the capsules so they come out like you want them to.  Usually they would find a piece of candy and a slip of paper that named either a toy or activity they were going to get to do.  They loved it and I had fun for years making up new ideas for the Treasure Machine.  You can come up with all kinds of ways to make this idea work for your family.

Toy Machine

You can use the 2 inch Toy Capsules because they fit more things and run more smoothly through the machine.

Be a Photographer! It’s a great workout!

Do you like to walk? Or rather, would you like to get a good workout and have fun?  One of my favorite hobbies is walking and taking pictures.  Even if I walk down my driveway, I get new pictures every time.  I know almost everyone is good at taking pictures now because every possible device has a great camera on it.  So you may wonder, what’s the use.  People take pictures of themselves, their food, their friends, a bug….I even know a person that took a picture of his child cleaning the toilet.  Do you know the complete peacefulness that comes from taking pictures though? I like to pretend I work for National Geographic and I am looking for new angles and interesting shots.  Next time you feel like going for a walk, don’t just walk, take pictures of what you see.  Listen carefully and you will hear how loud the quiet can be in the country and if you are in the city, you can notice all the action sounds around you.  Pretend to be a photographer and that you work for a magazine and you might find yourself walking further and noticing so much more.  Just watch the traffic though! I find I walk more because of my love of taking pictures!  It’s another way to enjoy life and really take in how much you have to be thankful for.  Here are some pictures I have taken on my walks.  I challenge you to do the same and share them with people.  You could brighten someone’s day because they got to see a beautiful picture! You may also be an inspiration to your kids or your family and friends to do the same thing.

Family Game Nights

I’ve spoken of reading so much already.  I love books!  Another activity that we enjoy with our kids is game night.  We’ve been playing boardgames with them since my oldest was about four. Here is a list of games we loved the most!

Product Details

Candy Land– This is such a sweet game (pun completely intended) and it’s easy to help the youngest win if need be.  I remember playing it when I was little and it will always be a game I’ll enjoy as much as the kids do.

Uncle Wiggily– This is so worth getting for your children because it helps them learn to read.  The illustrations are charming, and it’s perfect to give as a gift at Easter!

Trouble– This is such a fun game, but for kids under five, I’d advise adjusting the rules a bit because it could be frustrating.  The popper is great fun though!

Chutes and Ladders– This is a great game! It’s unpredictable who will win!

Memory– Now this game is always fun and comes in many different versions to appeal to the child’s interest.  One thing you could do though is create your own using pictures your child loves and see if they can make matches. It’s fun even for adults.

Shut the Box– This game, in it’s simplicity, is quite addictive even for adults.  It’s a great counting game and simple enough for young kids and challenging enough for adults!

Scrabble-This is Sean and my all time favorite game.  It is even more fun now that we have kids playing with us.

Yahtzee– This is another fun counting game!

Electronic Battleship– This is a fun game of strategy and easy for kids as young as six.

Monopoly– I honestly was not interested in this game at all as a child, but was re-introduced to it as an adult.  Our kids love it and it’s fun watching them try to make deals and it helps them learn to count money.

Other games we have loved but have not been repeated as often as the ones listed above are Hungry Hungry Hippos, Checkers, Chess, Connect Four, Operation and Charades.  I’m surprised we haven’t played these more because they are fun.  It’s good to play games as a family.  I think it’s just as important as reading together.
